When a school says no, or an insurer says no, you need a lawyer who has heard it before.
For nearly three decades, Michael Braun has represented families, students, and healthcare providers in the cases that matter most — IEPs the school district won’t write, autism therapy claims the insurer won’t pay, agency decisions that don’t follow the law. Based in Nashville, admitted in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, and recognized by his peers as the 2025 Autism Law Summit Lawyer of the Year.
What we do
Special Education Law
For families
IEPs, 504 plans, IDEA due process, manifestation determination reviews, and federal civil rights litigation when school districts won't follow the law.
Autism Advocacy & Insurance
For families and therapists
ABA coverage denials, ERISA appeals, and legislative advocacy. Michael lobbied passage of Alabama's autism insurance mandate (HB 284, Act 2017-337).
Administrative Law
For providers and businesses
State agency proceedings, contested cases, and rulemaking across Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
Certificate of Need
For healthcare providers
Michael served as Agency Attorney for the Alabama Certificate of Need Board. He knows how these decisions are made because he made them.
Home Health Regulatory
For providers
Medicare-certified home health agencies facing licensing, certification, and reimbursement disputes.
Real Estate Litigation
For businesses and individuals
Civil litigation in state and federal court across the Southeast.
A practice built on cases that go the distance
Michael has tried cases in eight states and argued before three federal Courts of Appeals. A short selection of representative matters:
- Sophie G. v. Wilson County Schools, 742 Fed.Appx. 73 (6th Cir. 2018) — federal civil rights appeal on behalf of a special education student.
- Hometown Home Health Care of Shelby County v. State Health Planning & Development Agency, 190 So.3d 44 (Ala.Civ.App. 2015) — Certificate of Need appellate review.
- Alabama Act 2017-337 (HB 284) — successful lobbying to require health benefit plans to cover the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- $1.1M jury verdict for an injured contractor in a Southeast trial.
